Receiving your first NDIS plan can feel overwhelming. Between unfamiliar terms, budget categories, and provider options, it's easy to feel unsure where to start. This guide breaks down the essentials so you can begin using your plan with confidence.
What's actually in your plan?
Most NDIS plans are structured around three broad support categories: Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports, and Capital Supports. Allied health services like Dietetics, Speech Pathology, Exercise Physiology, Nursing and Occupational Therapy are most commonly funded under Capacity Building — specifically, the "Improved Daily Living" and "Improved Health and Wellbeing" categories.
"Capacity Building funding is designed to help you build skills and independence over time — it's an investment in your long-term goals, not just your immediate needs."
Self-managed, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed?
How your plan is managed affects how you pay for services:
- Self-managed: you pay providers directly and claim reimbursement through the my NDIS participant portal or app.
- Plan-managed: a Plan Manager pays invoices on your behalf — you choose any registered or unregistered provider.
- NDIA-managed (Agency-managed): the NDIA pays providers directly, but you can only use NDIS-registered providers.
Getting started with allied health support
Once you understand your budget categories and management type, the next step is finding the right providers. Look for clinicians who are registered or accredited in their field (Speech Pathology Australia for Speech Pathologists, AHPRA for Nurses and Occupational Therapists, Dietitians Australia for APDs, and ESSA for Exercise Physiologists) and who have experience working with NDIS participants.
Questions to ask a potential provider
- Do you offer services at home, in the community, or via telehealth?
- Can you work with my plan management type?
- How quickly can I get an initial appointment?
- Do you provide progress reports for my plan review?
